They are the same as current models. You just need the 8 speed gear. It only cost $10. Problem is that it is no longer made. There is a solution. Buy a set of 8 speed downtube shifters. Swap the gear with the 9 or 10 speed gear in a current set. You have to make sure that the down tube shifter is the newest model with 3 springs not 2. The right shifter will have an adjuster on it. Most, but not all, of this version has the 3 spring gear. If you need help let me know and I can help swap if you have the parts.

Cost is the problem here. Used 8 speed DT shifters go for $35 and up. Used barcons go for $85 and up. Newer barcons on ebay are about $140 with cables but less shipping. You could spend upwards of $180 and be stuck with a lot of useless parts. Sometimes 8 speed barcons pop up on ebay. They usually are expensive as you are finding out.

This is one area where Shimano has a serious cost advantage. Do you have a current set of 9/10 speed barcons, I might be able to help.

Are that's alright. In that case i'll just pickup a set of shimano 8 speeds and get a Jtek shiftmate. I have a 8 speed campy rear with sora RD and shimano downtube levers at the moment. I'm going to get rid of those and install barcons.

Shiftmate is a little pricey.

Rivendell Bicycle Works sells adapters that let you mount downtube shifters as barcons. If you can get 8-speed Campy downtube shifters reasonably priced, these should work.
