6 stack or rear cogs on a 10 speed?

The bike i'm having problems with is a schwinn varsity 10 speed that i'm trying to fix up for my friend. In certain gears the chain "pops" alot, as if it was skipping a tooth on the rear cogs. I knew that this might be because the chain was old and stretched out so i put a new one on and it still does it. So does this mean that it's the gears and chain rings and that they're just old and worn? So this leads me to ask the question about the 6 stack on a 10 speed cause i have an extra set of good cogs for a 12 speed bike. Is it possible to put this on a 10 speed? My instinct tells me not because they wont line up correctly and gears for a 12 speed have different about of teeth too dont they?

Some clarification on this issue? And what should I do?
