New crank with larger front chainring, need new chain?

New crank with larger front chainring, need new chain?
Hey all,
I just got a new crankset that is 44T for the largest chainring, my old one had a 42T.
The chain I have right now has not been worn down much, I checked with a ruler to make sure it was 1/32" + 12" for 12 links, unfortunately, my LBS didn't have any extra links on hand. I was too cheap to buy a new 8 speed chain because i'm going to be upgrading to a 9 speed verey soon.
Think I can get away with it if I avoid using the largest cog and largest chainring combo?

That's 2 teeth man, don't worry about it. You should stay out of big/big anyway to avoid crosschaining.
Lots of folks take off the 53 ring and go with a larger TT ring with no chain issues.

If it was my bike I'd test it by putting the bike in a work stand or hanging it from the front wheel and gently shifting into the big/big combination. If that works, and I'm betting it will, you've got no worries.
The guys who take a cavalier attitude toward running a too short chain probably haven't seen some of the damaged bikes that I've seen. If you ever, even for a second, accidentally shift into the big/big while running a too short chain, it'll bend your derailleur cage into the spokes and can cause lots of expensive bike damage.
