thread size on old road cranks?

I wanted to put clipless pedals( mt bike) on an old road bike cause i hate the basket pedals but the threads on the pedals and cranks are different sizes. Is it just because the cranks are so old and there was a different standard back then or is there a different thread size between mt bike and road bike pedals? the cranks are gipiemme(italy) and the current pedals that fit on there are old campagnolo basket pedals.

you sure you're not trying to thread the wrong side pedal on the wrong side crank?

you can mail me those crappy basketcase campy pedals once you're done with them.

The vast majority of pedals/cranks are threaded 9/16" x 20tpi. An old French standard was 14mm x 20tpi and for a couple of years in the early 80's, Dura-ace AX was a larger thread (1" x 24tpi I think). AFAIK, Campy has always been 9/16"

Cheap department store bikes have 1/2" pedal threads.
