Seat post size

I want to replace the seat post on my beater, so last night I pulled it off to see what diameter the post is. Nothing on the post to indicate its diameter, though. I have two other seat posts that didn't fit it-- a 26.8 and a 26.6. Both were alloy, and both were too large. Is there some default seat post size that I should assume here in the absence of an indication on the seat post itself (it's a cheap steel seat post, either chromed or stainless)? Or is there some other way to figure this out (I don't have a set of calipers)?

Take the bike to an LBS. Most of them have a seatpost gauge that will slip into the seat tube and indicate the correct seatpost size. BTW. 26.0 is a fairly common size on inexpensive bikes.

You may be replacing a 25mm post. I had this size on a Takara older frame, that also had a hard to find stem/quill size (inside diameter of steerer column smaller, but with conventional 1" outiside diameter.)
I went through hell getting both. The 25mm post I found was an American Classic. I also found a very rare Campagnolo that is lost in the ozone of Canada Customs somewhere. Cannot advice, beyond post given above, concerning how to measure in the absence of vernier calipers. The bike store method may be the best. Sheldon says that they are available in .2mm increments. Too small not to make an expensive error in ordering, unless you can fit in a borrowed post to get the size right. Chris

Actually, if it is an American beater, it may be a 25.6mm. The 25's I have are slightly small for my Takara that takes a 21.1 stem rather than the more common 22.2mm stem. I will have to shim mine to get a tight fit, Chris

Your current seatpost should have the diameter stamped into it just below the MAXHT line.

Once you figure out what size you need, check out https://www.AEBike.com I just ordered a 350mm long 26.6mm and a 300mm long 7/8" topless BMX seatpost from them this weekend. They have an enourmous selection, and many inexpensive KALLOY posts (biggest size/length selection).
