short pull rapid fire brake levers/shifters?
I'm converting my old road frame into kind of a utility bike w/ flat bars, racks, and fenders. I plan on using a Shimano 600 8-speed rear with a Shimano 600 double up front. Can anyone suggest a brake/shifter combo that'll work with this?
Brake levers need to be short-pull. The only ones I can find are some cheap Shimano levers. They'll probably work fine. But I can't find any flat-bar shifters that'll work. Everything only works w/ a triple up front.
If all else fails, I suppose I can find a cheap set of friction shifters (any suggestions?), but I'd like a nice elegant solution like a rapid fire shifter/brake lever unit. But those don't seem to come in short-pull configuration from what I can see.
Price definitely is a consideration, since this is going to be gettin locked up outside a lot. I don't want to cry too much if it gets stolen.

I dislike Rapid-Fire shifters, particularly the front derailleur indexing and the inability to shift across several rear cogs at once. If it were my bike, I would use good old SunTour or Shimano friction thumb shifters, originally developed for old-school mountain bikes.

Thanks for the reply, John. That probably is the most simple (inexpensive) solution, and will be the most likely one I land on.
I think there is a set of Ultegra downtube shifters at my parents' house. Easiest thing to do would be to get those and mount them on the DT, but I'd like to keep everything up on the handlebars.
Has anyone here ever used the Paul Comp barend-to-thumbshifter converters? Are they: 1. worth the cost 2. compatable with Ultegra DT shifters?
Or, I could just go find a used set of friction shifters on eBay.
