cable housing question

I'm installling brakes on my bike for the first time, and I have a question. I am installing avid shorty cantilevers on drop bars, using dia compe brake levers. My problem is that no matter how tight I tape down the cable housing on the bars, the lever pulls the housing through the hole in the lever where the cable runs . I assume this is incorrect. When I pull the brake lever there is friction from the housing going back and forth inside the lever. How do I stop this from happening/ what am I doing wrong?

Shoudln't there be a metallic stopper at the end of the housing, where the cable comes out? Usually that metal thing is bigger than the hole the cable goes through on the break lever, and so it will avoid the problem you're having.

It is plastic, and keeps getting pulled through. Maybe I should get different housing/ metal ends?

Uh. Plastic? Me thinks you are using a plain cable with no ends and using a brake cable cap.

There should be a metal cap, called a ferrule, that fits over the end of the cable housing where it enters the brake lever (and the cable stops on your frame, etc). Most pre-packaged housing comes with a couple of them. If they are missing, or if you need a specially shaped one (old non-aero brake levers sometimes use one that looks like amushroom with the stem on top of the cap), your LBS should have a drawerful somewhere.

Are you sure that you are using a brake cable and brake cable housing?

Pretty sure, I am using the Delta Aztec Front and Rear Road Brake Cable Set that I bought here

https://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30...ils&sku=CA8421

It came with plastic ferrules, I guess I'll go to my lbs and see if they have any metal ones
