rear derailler

Howdy, I have an old bike with a SIS derailler with the hanger attached. I want to upgrade beyond a shimano tourney. I was told that I cannot put another derailler on the bike unless it has the hanger attached...like the tourney. It doesn't make sense to me that I couldn't put a hanger on the bike and attach any derailler that I want. Any thoughts if this makes sense

At the very least you will need a claw adaptor, if one is still availible.

That claw is because your frame lacks a RD hanger. Without one of those, your options are to find an adapter, or to just use anythiing with the claw on it.

Those adaptors should be readily available; I have one on my home-built recumbent. Costs a couple of bucks.

Try part # SU-550I SunRace Rear Derailleur Hanger. Might be 'zero-one' or 'Oscar-India' in the part number; the fonts in the paper catalog aren't clear.
