To install a threadless headset itself, will I need any tools, or just plug in and go. Any tips to help me install it?

I appreciate your help, thanks

To install the cups you would normally use a headset press but since you dont have one, I guess you can tap them in with a board and mallet. You know need to have a star nut or a headlock also right?

Instead of a board and mallet, you might try this:

An Inexpensive Headset Press (home made)

No, you said headset press. Just wanted to prevent a possible disaster... subtle humor can get lost in dry text.

You're right. You weren't kidding. I guess you can't make stuff like that up. Personally, I wouldn't want to take the chance.

I do just about everything on my bikes, but I opted to let an LBS install the headset. They only charges a few bucks. I did try gently tapping the cups in but there was obviously a problem; they wouldn't even start. Good thing I didn't force it because the LBS wound up having to ream the headtube a bit to get the cups in. You certainly want them to require a little force, but if you try yourself and they don't at least start pretty easily don't force it.
