Help to Identify World Sport Bottom Bracket specs!

Ok, I would like to find out what the specs are for a 1986 Schwinn World Sport bottom bracket.

This is a frame that came with a Sugino VP double crank. It does not have a crank cover/protector on it like other world sport models. It has Dia-Compe brakes.

It looks like this (without the derailleurs on)...

This bike also has an integrated derailleur hanger like this:

Cranks:

Any ideas about the BB size/thread?

Where was this bike made? It does not say chicago anywhere on it like some world sports say...

It's a 68mm English thread bottom bracket. It's tough to tell where a Schwinn from the '80's was made if the decals indicating country of manufacture are gone. If it's not USA made, it could be Japan (Panasonic), Taiwan (Giant), or China (China Bicycle), all of whom produced bikes for Schwinn during this time period. If it's USA made, it would be from the Schwinn plant that operated in Greenville, Mississippi from '81 thru '91. The Chicago plant shut down in '83, although they continued to use Chicago headbadges on some models well into the nineties, because their corporate headquarters remained there. If the tubing is True Temper, and it has "USA" on the tubing decal, it was made in Greenville. If you can find a serial number (either on the bottom of bb shell or on the left rear dropout), and it starts with "G", it was built by Giant in Taiwan. Otherwise, without decals stating country of origin (example: made in Japan for Schwinn Bicycles, etc.), it's very tough to tell..........Nice bike, btw.

I can't help you on this. But World Sports are awesome. I am currently getting one back to health. No matter where it was built, it is a great frame. You are lucky, mine has some really cheap calipers on it, bastard. However, all of the other components are decent. I just replaced the brake levers with some Shimano 105s, huge improvement. I hope to replace the calipers with the same 105 components.

Since you have an '86 World Sport, like the OP, then mystery solved......However, the dropout is also exactly like the one on my '84 le tour, made in Mississippi. These '80's Schwinns will drive you nuts.

Ouch!

I wondered that after I posted, why wouldnt the other dropouts look the same?

I've been suffering identity pangs with an 1982 Le Tour. Dang, these 80's Schwinns are as identifiable as the 80's school lunch mystery meat sandwiches.

Agreed!.......I love'em, though. As far as the dropouts, I've got an '83 le tour luxe, too, and it has stamped dropouts and an adapter claw for a derailleur hanger. The '82 you mention would've had this setup as well, as I had an '82 Super le tour that was like this (adapter claw). And actually, the dropouts on the '84 le tour (and like fordfasterr's World Sport) are very nice. The unpainted portion can be polished to an almost chrome-like shine. What a difference a year or two makes-

I have seen a few variations of World Sport dropouts... some with derailleur hangers, others without, others with metal-finished hangers (like the one above) and others with regular painted drop-outs...

its a fu_king mystery......

lol

BTW, the pics of the bike above are of my previous WS... I gave it away to a friend who needed it more than me...

A few days ago, I went on ebay and bought ANOTHER ONE just like it, it seems to be the identacal size and shape, and has the identical metallic finish on the drop-out for the derailleur hanger.....

here are some pics from the auction...

and the money shot:

BTW, I paid $ 100 for it + 35 shipping (I asked the seller NOT to include the stock wheels since I am going to be using a set of Vuelta wheels with aero spokes) with a single speed conversion =)

Anyway, my plan is to install some new cranks and a new BB, I had lots of problems with my old one so I wanted to get one of those new sealed bearing units and a set of track cranks for use with SS ... =)

Lets see how it goes......

I just got this bike in the mail...

unfortunately the top most edge of the seat tube lug was bent during shipping... nothing major, I hope to hammer it back in place and file it smooth =)

The last # on the serial # ends in a 7, which leads me to think that this is a 1987 world sport which explains why it DOES NOT have sugino cranks, instead it has SAKAE cranks....

Anyway... I can't wait to build it tonight ! =)

You may mean the headbadge number when you say serial number, but if not, then look on the headbadge for four small numbers stamped on it to determine when the bike was assembled. The first three digits represent the numerical day of the year, and the last digit represents the last number in the year. Example: 1487 would indicate the bike was assembled on the 148th day of 1987, assuming it's an '80's bike (which this one is, of course). Good luck with it-

If it helps my WS is an 88 with no chrome hanger or dropout. Just adding to the stew of misinfo!
Oh, Sugino cranks too.
