stupid mistake

I was attempting to take off the pullys on an old ass (1983ish) Suntour Mountech rear derailer and I unscrewed a screw and now the derailer doesn't spring up. Did i ruin this derailer? its this fixable? I remeber someone telling me that most derailers have a screw that you're not suppose to unscrew?

I don't know the Mountech specifically, but on many Suntour and Shimano derailleurs there is a post that keeps the cage from rotating back and therefore releasing the spring tension.

This post is threaded on many derailleurs and can be removed (either slotted or phillips head on the end of the post). If this is the case...

Make sure the spring end is in the hole that it is designed to go into.

Put everything together.

Remove the post.

Spin the cage to tighten the spring appropriately.

Replace the post.

I have not actually tried this, but have explored it visually and conceptually on a couple of different derailleurs that I am thinking of rebuilding. I read something about the removable post, I believe it was in the Classic & Vintage forum.

Good luck!

83'ish? I think I'm going to cry. I used to work on Suntours back then. Sniff. (Old guys rule dang it!) Anyway, you might have unscrewed the spring stopper. You'll have to twist the derailleur to get that stiffnes, then screw the screw back in so it stops at the proper tension.

The Mountech was unusual among SunTour's models, used a unique setup with a spring inside the jockey pulley. Notoriously troublesome, grossly overcomplicated, probably not fixable.

In any case even a low-end modern Shimano unit will work WAY better than the Mount-eccch ever did.

Thanks guys. I was born in 83 too but i do love old bikes even when they are older then me. I have a pile of 70s crusiers i'm trying to fix up too. I'll try to fix it just because i have nothing else laying around right (besides a shimano eagle i pulled off a Sears free spirit) now but i did spot an abandoned mountain bike on the way home. Is it ethical to pull parts of abandoned or abandoned seeming bikes?

If you have to ask, the question has been answered.
