Rebuilding old Schwinn Continental

Is it possible to use new parts to rebuild a bike this old? It's a Schwinn Continental from the 70's and I love it but thanks to a couple bad accidents involving drivers angry at having to share a 2 lane one way street with a bike commuter it's nearly impossible to ride. The only stuff that seems broken right now is the crank, both derailers and possibly the cassette.
Id love to be able to keep the frame and just update the broken bits with newer kit the cheaper the better.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
