wheel creaking -- alsways spoke related?
My back wheel creaks in 3 spots when I lean down on the seat and roll the bike back and forth. (old bike I just got)
Is this almost always the spokes? Putting 3-in-1 oil at the nipples worth a shot?
Its possible that the rim is deflecting up very slightly when it bottoms out. These wheels "feel" a little slower (coasting speed) than a previous bike, but it could just be that it and the bike are a bit lighter.

If the rim is deflecting noticably, your spoke tension is much too low. Try oiling the spoke nipples, both at the threads and where the nipples enter the rim. It's a quick fix if it works and eliminates that as a problem if it doesn't.

If the wheel creaks, the tension in the spokes might be too low allowing them to move slightly, and although oiling might silence the creaking, it will do nothing to fix the lack of tension.
The wheel should be tensioned and stress-relieved so that the spokes do not move. Moving spokes lead to broken spokes which is A Bad Thing.

checking for loose spokes and tightening everything got rid of all the creaking... no oil was needed. There were some surprisingly loose spokes on it.
thanks for the help.
