noob question

If a bike comes in the 6 inch rotor size and I want to put an 8in on, would it not fit? Like does the location of the boss on the fork decide how wide the rotor would be?

Yes - the location of the disc tabs on the fork determine the diameter of the rotor that must be used, so far as I know. You may be able to buy some tabs that will allow offset to the larger diameter disc, but you may need to buy a different fork instead.
