does shimano chain CN-7700 = CN-7701?

went to replace my chain, ordered what I thought was the correct one for shimano durace 9-speed. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the original is stamped CN-7700, the replacement is CN-7701. For those in the know, are these functionally identical? Why would a manf. change the designation?
Thanks.
