    Campy Compact Questions

I'm in the process of the parts pick for a new bike. I know I'm going to stay with campy. I used to run 53/39 - 12/25.

I'm considering 50/36 - 11/23 for every day. Can you help me answer some questions?

Does 50/36 require the compact front derailleur that the 50/34 requires?
I thought 13/29 required a long cage rear derailleur. Is that right?
What is the step up from short/med/long cage.
    Is it 11/23 - 12/25 - 13/29 respectively?

Can the 36 ring be swapped with a 34 ring without changing anything other parts?

    Thanks for your input.

With double cranksets the short cage will handle all cassettes except possibly the 13-29. Some folks say it will work with the 13-29. Campy says you need a medium with the 13-29.

The long cage rear derailleur is for triple cranksets.

Cage length is about chainwrap capacity, not cog size.

50/34 does not require a compact front DR. I'm running my Campy 50/34 on an old Record 8-speed front DR.....and it shifts perfectly and haven't dropped the chain yet.

You can make 36 to 34 ring swaps....just remember to adjust DR height.

Thanks for the info. One more question.

How do you calculate chain wrap to determine rear derailleur cage length?

Wait till the '07 stuff comes out in October. On the cage length, go to the campy website and pull up the manuals.

    Asked and answered:

To calculate chain wrap, subtract the sum of teeth for both the smallest chainring and sprocket from the sum of teeth for the largest chainring and sprocket.

    eg. [(53 + 23) - (39 + 11)] = 26
