I have an old raleigh with a sturney archer 3 speed shift lever. I need to replace the cable. Could anybody tell me how to replace it? I looked at the original, and it seemed to have a heavy duty cable end cap holding the cable inside the shifter, but i couldnt figure out how to install the new one.

But you could take an end cap and solder it onto a standard brake cable (you have to cut the lug off first). There's actually very little pressure on the cable from the indicator chain, just a few pounds. It's not at all like a brake cable. And even if it breaks the failure mode is that the bike shifts into third and stays there.

EDIT: Sorry. I read that as you were looking for a new cable rather than trying to install one you have.

Just push the cable into the trigger through the cable hole. You have to pry up the springed catch mechenism that engages the trigger teeth with a screwdriver or something and grap ahold of the head of the cable with a pair of needle nose pliers. Then pull the cable around the mechisim with the teeth, in between the two double rails below the trigger handle. Put the trigger in third gear and pull the cable back around to behind the handle. The end cap will fit in a groove in the double rails back there.

Then feed the other end of the cable through the cable housing and down to the hub. Tighten the adjustment lug onto it such that when it's screwed onto the indicator chain the cable is tight but it's not pulling the chain out of the hub at all in third gear. Verify that it pulls the chain one full link out of the hub when you switch to seond gear, and then another half link when you switch to first.
