Shimano 9sp to 7sp hub question

Can you run a 7 sp cassette on a current 9 sp freehub with a spacer? If not can you swap a 7 sp freehub body on the hub and redish the wheel? Sounds crazy but I have an almost new Deore 7 speed group that I want to swap out on a cross bike project.

Sure. You need a 4.5 mm spacer. Any decent bike shop should be able to provide this.

Something told me you would know the answer to this. Thanks for the help.

I doubt this would meet with universal approval, but i am doing what you want to do. I am using a knackered cog from an old cassette as the spacer. Works just as well so long as you don't look at the ugly old thing!
Who needs 9 speeds anyway! (he says clutching 10 speed centaur bits)

This one is a seven speed with a nine speed wheel. I think I probably got the 4.5 mm spacer from Sheldon.

The rear derailer and front hub are Ultegra. I like to be different.
