Brake Hanger compressing headset?
For all you mechanics, this is my first build. It's a Surly LHT that seems to be fairly well dialed in but I just noticed that the brake hanger for my catilevers is compressing the top of the headset in the front of the head tube....this normal? doesnt appear to be affecting anything.

Is the hanger on the bottom of the stack? If not, put it there and the issue will be addressed.

The hanger ring is also a spacer. It should be the lowest of all your spacers in the stack.

Here is my setup:

Sorry for asking the obvious, but after adjusting the headset, did you tighten the hanger's clamping bolt enough that the hanger doesn't shift when the brakes are applied? Yes = good.
Or maybe you mean that the dropped nose of the hanger is making "rim contact" with the upper cup of the headset. If that's the case, put the hanger higher in the stack so it doesn't touch the headset. |
I'll try to put a spacer in between the hanger and the headset, but I dont believe it's making "rim contact". I believe it's the upper race that's being compressed forward so that the gap in the back is larger than the gap in the front. And yes, I've tightened the heck out of it >.>

Also, fasten down its clamp bolt while the brake cable is not in the hanger, so that you're fastening it down in a neutral condition, without the cable pulling down on the front of it.
