Wrong Diameter Cable = poor RD performance?

Recently replaced my rear derailleur cable w/ a nokon system and the performance has kinda gone downhill.

there is NO friction whatsoever, i promise...

I've noticed that the nokon supplied gear cable is thicker than the standard ones i've seen and used in the past.

Is it possible that my shifting will return if i install a smaller (standard) diameter cable?

I want to try everything reasonable before giving in and paying the LBS to do it.

Thanks
B.

oh.. if it matters ultegra, road, STI 10 speed.

I'd check on the installation of the nokons before giving up on them. They need to make a complete "U" turn around the derailleur mounting bolts and, because they are a bit thicker, you need to be sure they have seated squarely in the shifters.

the rear d. will shift smootly from the smallest up to the 6th or 7th cog, then it'll skip a cog so by the time i get to the largest one, I still have one click left. On the way down, the first click does nothing, but somewhere around cog 3-5, it'll skip again, so I arrive on the smallest cog on the correct click.

I really don't want it to be the housing system. I've wiggled and pulled/pushed to make sure everything is seated as securely as it can be. I'm hoping that the extra thickness of the cable is messing with the indexing system on the shifter because larger diameter will lead to more pull as it wraps around whatever's inside the shifter, which agrees with what i'm seeing.

Brian.
