Stem Choice For Reynolds Ouzo Pro Fork
I purchased a used 2000 Lemond Alpe D'Huez frame to build up as my new bike. The bike was a great deal as it came with a Chris King threadless headset and a Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork. The Reynolds fork came with an intalation packet which says: "Warning the Ouzo Pro carbon fork must be used with a "circumfrential" clamp style use of a "pinch" or "wedge" clamp style may cause damage to the steerer tube which may result in rider injury or death." It also says: "Not all circumfrential stems are created equal. In our intitial testing we have determined that stems with thin walled symetrical clamps (slot down middle of the back) provide the most uniform clamping forces, stems with a thicker walled clamp and assymetrical slot (off to one side) create a rather high point loading resulting in potential steerer damage." My question involves stem choice I'm not sure I totally understand what there saying and want to know how much is true. The fork has a 1" Carbon steerer. I really like the look of the older Cinelli Alter stems and they are designed for 1" threadless steerers. How ever the bolts and slot are on the front of the stem. Will this create problems I dont want to damage my $300 fork or hurt myself but I really like those stems and would like to use one. Also if the Alter wont work I have a spacer to adapt it to 1 1/8th to use most stem, however the spacer uses a a symetrical cut will it be ok to use? Am I reading to much into all of this and about anything will be fine? Heres a pic of the clamping mechanism on the the Alter:

The alter is a symmetrical cut. It is just in the front instead of the back of the stem. Don't worry.
