Two thumbs up to Giro Helmets - new pads on the way

I've got an '04 Giro Monza; the pads are getting a bit frayed. I emailed Giro's customer support address and almost immediately got a note back asking for size information and then a note that the pads are on the way.

Great service.

Bill

- that's good news and great to read that the Giro division understands customer service...

- unfortunately for me, i went and washed my Bell Metropolis pads due to accumulated head smegma... and the pads fell apart... fortunately i had a spare set on hand from a new helmet shattered in a crash... i then traced the pads on thick felt and cut my own replacement set...

- now i can have new pads anytime i want for pennies apiece!

I've had better luck using adhesive foam from Home Depot for replacements. I actually think I like it better than original pads since it doesn't hold sweat. One roll for $4 will last you a lifetime -- you can renew all your old helmets for donation or guests...

I just cut tiny rectangles and place where needed

I expect Giro's customer service is the same as Bell's since they are the same company. When Giro was independent years ago, Bell's customer service was reported to be much better than their's.

I had the same success with Bell. Called them up, gave them model of helmet and year. Four days later had pads in the mail. I've also had excellent customer service from Saris/Graber on parts for my older T-rax. Call up, tell them what I need, comes to my door a few days later.

I've had dealings with Bell, Cateye and Topeak. Out of these three only Bell (I requested a bike computer manual) that actually replied to my emails.

Maybe it's because i'm Canadian.

Gotta email address for Bell in Canada, I have a Bell Helmet and it would be handy to have if I need to get ahold of them.....

so where does the sweat go? in your eyes? one purpose of the pads is to hold sweat.

I have never had to deal with Giro customer service, but I have been happily wearing their helmets for several years. I really like the fit of my new Zen, even though it pushed my budget.

Yeah, that may work in a place like Colorado (used to live there) in the fall, where sweat is minimal and the climate is dry. Here in Austin, during my 102F luntime rides, no helmet pad is going to hold more than 15 minutes worth of sweat, then it drips down anyway. Worse than that, if I look over my shoulder, my stap tightens on my twisted neck, and it squeezes out a flow of sweat. That DOES go in my eyes, on my sunglasses, etc.

The non-absorbant foam leaves sweat behaving consistently no matter how long you ride. I just squeegie out my eyebrows every couple of minutes (they store sweat better than helmet pads). The pads never get stinky. Replacement is easy, and they stay attached for around 6 months for me. Failure mode is adhesive failure, and it's gradual.

I'm pretty sure Giro/Bell will supply one new set of pads each year at no charge.

Yeah, they were kind of designed to do that and they work pretty well. LOL. Anyhoo, nice tip on the replacement pads. Thanks!

It has nothing to do with the fact that you are Canadian. I've had excellent customer service from BOTH Cateye and Todson (the parent company of Topeak and Onguard.) Both Cateye and Todson have sent me replacement parts to Latvia with no questions asked. These two companies go way beyond normal customer service.
