ticking sound only when coasting

My riding buddy has this annoying ticking sound coming from his rear (wheel or there abouts). It only sounds when he is coasting' its frequncy seems to be the same as his wheel rpm. It doesn't sound when he is off the bike and we just spin the wheel. He took his bike in to his LBS and they "couldn't find anything wrong"; they said that they checked his spoke tension. The sound was still there during this morning's ride.
Does anybody have any suggestions to getting rid of tha noise (besides never coasting)?

Some brands of hubs are notorious for the freewheel pawl and ratchets making a loud click when coasting.

Not worth worrying about but lubricating the freewheel might help. sheldonbrown.com parktool.com

had the same problem. Came and went, drove me nuts-thought it was a crack in the rim flexing. Gave up and took wheel to LBS-turned out that it was due to lack of any lube on spoke nipples. They lubed nipples lightly and clicking gone!

Nothing beats well lubed nipples.

Check your bearings.
