    How much variance in tires size for a rim?

    Is a rim built for a narrow range of tire sizes? I have a Trek Hybrid with Bontrager rim and 700x35 tires on it and I have noted that 700x35 are not as common or easy to find up in a LBS as the thinner tires used on normal road bikes. In fact all the web sites who sell tires say that the Bontrager Select Invert tires I have have must be picked up (no mail) at their shop.
    If I blow a tire while on a trip with no 700x35 tire available in the small town LBS, what tire size should I be able to substitute with my rim? 700x28mm? 700x38mm?
    I would like to find a foldable tire in suitable size to keep as an emergency spare. I have not found a foldable 700x35 so far.

    You can use an extremely wide (pardon the pun) variety of tire widths on any given rim. There would be no problem at all running anywhere from 28-38mm on your current wheel. If your rims are wider than a standard road rim (just roll your bike up next to a road bike and take a look) then I wouldn't go any narrower than 28. Why? Because the tire profile would get flattened out too much and cause your bike to handle funny. On the other extreme I wouldn't go past about 44mm - too wide and you might have the tire roll off the rim and you probably couldn't get the wheel back on your bike anyway.

    Here is a table showing the recommended range of tire widths for each rim width: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#width Basically, measure your rims' interior width, then look at the table and you'll see the appropriate tire sizes for your rims.

    you'ld be surprised what you can manage in an emergency! when my rear blew a few months ago, i managed to fit a specialized all condition pro 25c tyre onto my mavic a319 rims. I normally run a 35 or 32c... if only I had put the racey tyres back on for that crit [18th is alright for a hybrid though ]

    Most tyre blowouts or damage can be made ridable with a boot of some tough material to line the inside. Parktools make a special boot, otherwise use packing tape, powerbar wrapper, dollar bills or anything else.
    Spare tyres are for expedition tours where you are a very long way from any bike shop stocking your size.
    It may be useful to keep an extra tyre at home as part of your stock of spares.

    I have more problems sourceing medim sized inner tubes for 28-32mm size.

    +1 on the boots. Dollar bills and mylar wrappers are the best. Both are quite strong.

    As for medium sized inner tubes, I've had no problem finding these. My LBS, Performance, and Nashbar all stock them. Then again, you can use small size 18-25 mm inner tubes with larger tires, in a pinch, though they seem prone to slow leaks.
