Front Der Adj Help

I have a 2000 Lemond Zurich with Ultegra, 3 chainring. My front derailleur was rubbing on my large chainring (it would stop if I pressed on the shifter even though the chain didn't shift any further).

I looked at the threads here and the Park Tools site and went to adjust the front der. The height was ok. Next, I noticed that the cage was out of alignment - the front was much closer to the chain than the rear - so I loosened the bolts and turned the clamp so that the cage was about parallel to the chain.

This moved the cage in too far so the chain rubbed against the der cage, so I loosened the screw that holds the shifting wire and pulled it a bit tighter. The der seemed to move in towards teh bike when I loosened the screw. Now, the chain is fine in the small chainring, rubs in the middle chainring, and won't shift to the large chainring. I tried loosening the wire back near where it started but that didn't help. I also tried adjusting the H and L screws but cannot get enough travel.

Can someone help me with the steps I need to take to get the front der working properly again? I assume I somehow need to reset the tension on the wire, but I am not sure how to do it and thought I should ask before experimenting. After that, I imagine I will need to set the L and H screws to control the derailleur movement.

Thanks in advance. I probably won't see this until after work tomorrow but I appreciate your assistance.

You probably should not have adjusted the H and L screws, those are the derailleur's travel limit screws and are there to keep the chain from jumping off of the chainrings. Go to the Park Tool website and follow the instructions for adjusting the derailleur. Start at the beginning, do all of the steps in proper sequence, and don't leave anything out.

Al, Thanks for the reply but that is what I did. I went back and checked everything but the adjustments seem fine. Right now, the front der shifts ok from the small to the middle chainring, although there is some rubbing in the middle chainring that I can't seem to get rid of. It won't shift up to the large chainring even though I have made sure the wire is pretty tight (much tighter than the rear der wire). I can pull the wire by hand and get it to shift up, but the der cage rubs the chain a lot.

Maybe the question is more like how do you install the front der when building a bike? You set the height and then the der cage angle. After that, what? Do you just put the der in the smallest chainring and then pull the wire tight, and it shifts ok (subject to the H-L adjustments) or do you have to do something else to the der as part of tightening the wire?

Thanks.
