side pull brake adjusting barrel problem

I have an old zeus bike with shimano 600 side pulls. The little square rotating piece that the adjusting barrel screws into has part of an old adjusting barrel stuck in it. it is just part of the threads, all the way around. It looks like one just broke off in it. there is a very very small portion sticking out, and an equally small part inside. Is there any way to get this out without ruining the threads?

also, am I correct in saying there is no way to replace the rotating part the barrel screws into? It looks like it is riveted in.
