Why Can't I trim in the Small Chainring?

I have the R700 compact with an Ultegra FD-6600. It lets me trim in the big cainring just fine, but when I try it in the small chainring it always just does a full shift. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit--obviously in the title I meant "trim." Gotta remember to give it a final read before submitting.

MOD EDIT: I fixed the title for you.
Stacey

I'm running some much older Ultegra shifters with a compact crankset and I get two shift positions for each chainring.

I'm going to guess that you probably have an adjustment issue. Goto the Park Tool website and find front derailleur installation and adjustment. Completely disconnect your shift cable (important) and cycle your small shift lever several times to be sure that it's in the lowest gear position. Then follow the Park Tool step-by-step instructions.

Try clicking all the way down. Then see how much cable tension you have. I would bet that it is loose and the slack needs to be taken up.

You guys were both right. I had slack in the line, probably from not making sure I had the FD set all the way left before tightening the cable. Thanks!!!!
Damn I love this forum.
Now if I could only figure out why the chain wants to keep jumping to the big ring even when the FD isnt touching it. Granted I'm on the small cog, but that shouldn't be happening. Perhaps another thread coming on this one.

You shouldn't be using the smallest cog with the small chainring. It is trying to tell you that by trying to shift up to the big ring on its own.

I know I shouldn't, but if it happens by accident my other bikes still let me do it. They don't punish me by throwing it onto the large ring.
Perhaps it's possessed by....DEMONS!

Check out your chainline when you're in that gear combination. It's common for the chain to rub the inside of the big ring. If it rubs hard enough I suppose it could cause an unintended shift. If that's the case, you may be able to solve it by installing a 2mm spacer behind the bottom bracket to move the crank out a bit.
