10sp Chain on a 9sp drivetrain?
I have an extra 10sp Ultegra chain and am looking to build up my winter beater bike with some extra 9sp parts (combo of 105/Tiagra) that are gathering dust in the garage. I shouldn't have any problems running a 10sp chain on a 9sp gruppo, right? I'm thinking it would be not only be compatible but would shift better due to the thinner chain. Am I right?

As far as I know, thinner chains pose no problems. However, a 10-speed chain will likely wear out faster and cost more money than a 9 speed chain to replace. Of course, since you have the 10 speed chain already, that's not a problem.
As for shifting, I can imagine that the only benefit would be a lower likelyhood of the chain rubbing the derailleurs, so it might be slightly easier to tune. As for making your shifting "better" in any other way - that seems less likely.
For the record, I am not experienced with 9 and 10 spd setups. But using a thinner chain on 5-8 speed drivetrains is never a problem. Same should apply.

Try it. If it doesn't work you'll know pretty fast.

I'm not sure about the 9/10sp combination, but I have heard that there can occasionally be issues when using a 9 speed chain on an 8 speed crank. The problem is that the spacing of the chain rings has to be narrower for narrower chains, so that when downshifting, the chain will fall off the larger ring and land on the smaller one properly. Under certain very specific conditions the narrow chain can actually end up jamming between rings. I don't think there should be any problems with the rear, because the RD shifts by guiding the chain along its centreline, whereas the FD pushes the chain from the sides.
As I said, I don't know if this caution applies to the 10 speed case. FWIW, I'm currently running a 9 speed chain on an 8 speed crank and it shifts beautifully. It's a friction shifter though.

Thanks for the confirmation.
I did, BTW, did a search on "10sp 9sp chain" in title only in Bike Mechanics and came up with 499 hits. I browsed thru several pages of the results and didn't come up with my answer. Maybe it was buried in threads and not in the title.

why waste a 10 sp chain on a 9 sp beater? Especially when you have a 10 sp bike?
