Chainring question

Anyother question from a wanna be mechanic.

Say if have a 53/39t chainrings on my crank. Will I have to get the exact one to fit from the same manufacturer or can they interchange.i.e can FSA 53/39 can be replaced by a Shimano 53/39,or are the cranks configured differently

Thanks for that. That's cleared it all up.

Any idea on what sort of mileage the rings should be replaced?
