Shimano SIS shifters with suntour derailers?

I have a Suntour XCM Lite RD and a Suntour top pull FD. I want to change out the Suntour friction shifters with Shimano SIS index shifters.

Are the Shimano shifters compatible with the Suntour derailers?

TIA

Ah, thank you.

So I would have to change out the RD & FD as well? Or is there more involved than that?

On the basis that Suntour 7 speed Accushift SHIFTERS are compatible with Shimano DERAILLEURS, it well might could be.

Its a matter of matching cable pull between shifters and rear derailleur, and rear sprocket center to center distance.

Best documented knowledge base at
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html

Look down the page to the table beneath the header "Sprocket Spacing".

Annecdotally, I'm running 7 speed Suntour Accushift shifters, Shimano HG-70 cassette and a Deore M570 LX rear derailleur. The setup indexes perfectly.

Pls report back!

I put Shimano grip shifters on my daughter's bike with a Suntour deraileur and a Shimano freewheel. It shifts fine.

On an older Raleigh Technium that originally had Suntour Accushift indexed 6 speed shifters with a Suntour FD and a Suntour 3040 RD that had a Shimano 6 speed freewheel, I was able to put a rear wheel on that had a Shimano 7 speed cassette and shift with the Accushift shifters just fine. I had to pull it past the first indexed click for the largest sprocket, (Thanks Sheldon for the advice) and had seven speeds. I have since installed Ultegra seven speed indexed shifters on it and it shifts the Suntour 3040 perfectly. It is as crisp and smooth as the STI setup on my Trek 1500. If you really want to do this, try the Suntour derailers first, you can always buy a derailer if you need it. Hope this helps.
