Inserting pin for replaceable V-brake pads

Is there any trick to this? I'm having trouble getting the pin to go throug to the hole on the bottom of the brake shoe, so it feels like the new pads are a little loose (those two facts may be unrelated?).

There is a vertical groove in the rear section of the pad that corresponds with the hole for the pin. I found, when replacing my stock Specialized pads with Kool Stops, that I really had to push hard to get that groove in the pad to align with the pin hole. Once it did, I just got the pin started, and then turned the pad over and pushed down on a table to get the whole thing to pop into place. YMMV, depending on the type of pad and the holder.

Ah but that would involve taking off the shoe / holder thingie. That, for me at least, defeats the convenience of the system.
