need new chain ring

i've converted an older 7 speed Trek 7000 MTB to a commuter and have replaced the BB, chain, pedals, and cassette already. the chain ring is a triple Shimano SG C-46 and is next on the list to replace. since my commute is relatively flat, i ride exclusively in the largest chain ring and shift only between the 3 smallest gears on the cassette.

can i go with a single or double chain ring? what would be an easy drop-in replacement?

i'm a noob.

Thanks!

If you match the bottom bracket type, virtually any crank will work.

However, since you have to ask, there is a high chance that you don't have a crank puller...

To get an ideal chain line, you should usually go with a different bottom bracket with a shorter spindle, but since you spend most of your time in the small three cogs, in my opinion you should be fine with the existing spindle. However, if you had a less flat ride, the spindle length would be more beneficial, and well worth the extra few dollars.
