Ultegra 53/39 chain ring question (basic)

In April, I upgraded from 105(8) to the Ultegra (10). Nice change, great crank, and less maintenance over all. Now after 1,500 miles I notice that the grey coating where the chain engages the crank appears worn off. Shifting is still quick as new.

What is the grey coating...Is this normal for the grey coating to be worn off?
