chain skipping
 

put on a new freewheel and new chain, and now the chain skips when I am in the larger cogs on the freewheel.

I put the same number of chain links on that I took off. I reused the same chain ring.

Help?

Is the deraileur not putting enough tension on the chain? Or at the right angle? Glancing at other bikes the deraileur on mine seems not to be pulling back as far as theirs. I took it off and cleaned it and it feels like what I would guess is right.

I have a similar problem, but I just added a new chain. My chain skips when in the smallest ring and largest cog, it doesn't do this in the other rings. This has never happend to me on my road bikes, but since I bought a MTB bike last year (which I have ridden pretty hard I admit), I'm learnin' all kinds of differences between the 2 sports. :o

I'm told the ring is worn and needs to be replaced.

Since you replaced the freewheel (with a new one I assume?) AND the chain, it tells me the ring(s) needs to be replaced. Does the chain skip on ALL rings or just one? If just one, replace THAT ring also.

One thing I have learned with MTBing is that chain cleaning is required alot more often than road riding....well...duh.

yup, new freewheel.

New chain rings? I was guessing that since the chain makes contact with so much of the chainring (being a much larger diameter), that it really would not make much difference. Unless maybe the chainring is totally worn down to nothing. So, let me restate this convoluted claim, and tell me if I am wrong: Putting a new chain on an old chainring will likely not make it skip. Unless the ring is worn far, far down.

In any case, the chain is slipping over the rear cogs.

I am still curious to hear if anyone has any comments on my speculation that chain tension is relevant somehow.

If I do need a new chainring, please lie to me. I really do not want buy one for this thing.

When you sized the chain did you compare it to the previous and take off the proper amount of links?
OR
when you compared the two, was the previous chain so 'stretched' that you misjudged the proper size by one link? I don;t see being one link out causing the problem you describe.

If you put a new freewheel on and it is a differant size (?) OR if you chain is longer or shorter you will have to adjust the B tension screw on the derailler. With the chain in the lowest gear (large rear, small front) turn the screw counter CW which raises the top jockey pulley, CW lowers the jockey pulley, or moves it away from the freewheel. Set the jockey wheel so that it just misses the cogs - turn it counter CW

Although, having said all that, I tried it on mine (same cog cluster and rings) and it made no difference. BUT, as I said, perhaps you have a longer or shorter chain or differant sized cogs on your freewheel...?
