cottered french bottom bracket replacement spindle

I have some older campy spindles lying around and would like to salvage the cups and replace the spindle so that I can go cotterless. Anyone know if this is possible? Are campy spindles long enough to accomodate the thin walls of the french cups so that the adjustable cup can be locked down?

Sheldon Brown says somewhere (can't find the link) that French cups are generally too thin to use normal 68 mm spindles :( His shop, Harris Cyclery, selles French BB spindles made by TA, but they're ridiculously expensive at $80. I think maybe ebay would be your best option here.
