Flat tire ==> damaged rim?

Flat tire ==> damaged rim?
Is this normal or just bad luck or defective wheel?
I had a flat today on my Trek 4300. Tube actually exploded with a loud sound. I hit the brakes - and they ripped side of the wheel apart
Bike is still under warranty - but I am not sure if things like that covered... Should I aks for replacement under warranty or just buy a new wheel?
