kickstand damage to chainstays

I took a look at an old for-sale Raleigh Grand Prix today. When I turned the bike over, I noticed that someone had seriously cranked down a kickstand (no longer on the bike) and flattened the bottom of the chainstays - that is, unless someone can advise me that they're shaped that way, but I don't think so. I couldn't see any cracking around the BB but it gave me enough pause to pass on the bike. What do you think - is this just cosmetic, or did I make the right call?

I thought something like that happened on mine - when I posted pics I got a clean bill and the frame has held up fine under my 280#

This is what it looks like at the start of its rebirth:

It was probably okay. My old steel fixed gear frame has the same deal.

Thanks for the replies. Probably too late for this bike, but I'll keep it in mind in the future. I suppose it's a pretty common defect.

Not necessarily a defect - I think it's manufactured flat spot so the kickstand has a surface to clamp to.

I'd be more concerned about the tires than a bit of rust!

Yes, many bikes have (or used to, anyway) come with this flat spot for a kickstand.

Even if it was flattened out by the stand itself, I would not be terribly concerned with it. Except for cosmetic reasons, of course.

+1. This is all-too-common. Probably fine to ride, but it does make you mad at the original dumbass, doesn't it?

Oh yeah - this was the first thing I was looking at because I was concerned about the dent. Changed about half the components since then...now all that's left are wheels to hold me up! (Whole story is in my sig under De-Evolution of a wheel )
