First check the crank bolt for tightness. Then check the BB cups to make sure they are snug. After that, time to tear it apart....

Are you certain it's coming from there? You have a full suspension frame there. In addition to the variety of other places that sounds can eminate from a traditional rigid frame, a suspension design introduces plenty of linkages, pivot points and things that slide back and forth which can produce noise. It could be coming from the swingarm pivots or the shock for instance.

Sounds can be deceptive. On one ride, I once had a clanking noise that occurred everytime I stood up to pedal. I thought for sure there was a problem with my headset or bottom bracket or even pedals. As it turned out, it was the metal zipper pull of my jersey clanking against the metal part of the zipper itself.
