Rockshox Airshock, need some info

Question for anyone who has serviced or taken apart a Rockshox airshock (or any other type come to think of it).
If I turn the bottom shaft half in relation to the top half am I unscrewing anythng ? Dont want to take a brand new shock apart just to prove something that someone ca advise me on here. So is the top of the shaft, which I guess runs upwards from the bottom half screwed into the top cap ? Or does it just sit there ? Like I say I am just worried I am unscrewing something when I turned the bottom half round about 90 degrees to fit it to my bike.

Thanks in advance
