Threaded Fork Question

I normally post in the C+V forum but I guessed this would be the place for this question.
On one of my bikes I currently have a damn heavy 1" 225mm steerer 50mm threaded fork,
I want to change it to a light threadless fork-I am assuming this can be done?
Is a 1" threadless fork,new threadless headset and stem the only parts I'll need?
and if i try and GL or Ebay the fork what steerer length should be the minimum?

If the bike has a brake cable that is hung on the steerer, you will need a new cable hanger. You may want to get some spacers too, depending on how long you make your steerer.

As for the length of the steer, you will need one long enough to extend past the headset and for the stem to clamp to. I'd give it 30mm more at a minimum (so a 255 mm length) and probably try to find something more in the range of 275 to 300mm if you can. You will have a shorter stack height than the threaded headset because you don't have the headset nut, but get the longest steer tube you can. Leave the steerer a little long until you find the fit you want and then cut it down further if necessary.

Thank you-It does have a cable hanger but i am taking this opportunity to change brake to
dual pivot sidepulls.
One last question-seeing as I am changing the whole thing-should I get a 1" threadless set up
or a 1 1/8" threadless set up-or does not it matter?
No more forking questions - promise

You *must* get a 1" threadless setup! A 1-1/8" threadless headset will not fit your head tube, nor will a 1-1/8" fork. Nashbar has a 1" carbon-bladed road fork for about $60 right now, and a 1" threadless headset for $14... quite good prices!

If you have a 1" fork now, you are stuck with it. You can go from a 1 1/8" fork to a 1" fork but there just ain't room for the reverse. Unless you want to cut the old head tube off and get a new one, weld (or braze) it in place, align the frame, possibly heat treat it, prime and, finally, paint it. It'd have to be one special bike for that

Sounds good. Switching to dual-pivot brakes is a wise move as well. When I went from single- to dual-pivot brakes on my racing bike, I was amazed at the increased stopping power!

Where on Nashbar is the $60 carbon fork? Cheapest I can see is $80.
