I thought I'd try out the Presta valves, considering all the good reviews I heard about them. Actually, they are indeed easier to pump with a Presta-headed pump. I just want to be able to use my adaptor with a Schrader pump. You'll never know when you may encounter such a situation where there's no Presta pump.
The only reason you might need an adapter is if you want to use a gas station pump or if you happen to have one of the rare pumps without the conversion.

+1 I only use presta valves (over 20 bikes right now).
+1 Just get a decent floor pump with a dual head, and you are good to go. I bought a Sette floor pump (from Pricepoint, same place I get my tubes). Their tripod base unit costs less than $15.

While we're on the subject of pumps, does anyone know where I can get a replacement one-way valve/adaptor for pumps themselves? I've got a dual-head floor-pump that uses one of these and some idiot tried to pump up his presta valves when the pump was configured schreader. Using the idiot tactic of "if it doesn't work, use more force", he jammed the presta-valve harder into the opening until it broke off the little nub that opens the schraeder valve. So now, I've got a pump-head that only works on presta mode. grrr....

tried the bike shop you got the pump from dannoxyz? there is always the economics of selling only the whole replacement head to get the small part ..
it's how the 'wonders of the market place' works..
