How to find/fix French threaded cartidge BB?
I'm having an old Stella frame repainted and will be building it back up. What metrics do I need to know to choose a cartridge style BB? Is this even possible? Is there a company that makes cartridge BBs with French threading. I'd like to stay with a square taper spindle if possible. The BB it had in it was a press-in style cups with a Shimano spindle and possessed an irritating habit of unthreading itself at regular intervals. Paging Dr. Loctite...

Phil Wood (www.philwood.com) lists a range of square taper cartridge bottom brackets in both ISO and JIS tapers and offers French threaded cups to go with them. These things aren't cheap but are very good quality and in the form you need.

You could use one of these, but be sure to read the note:

while more expensive i plan on using the phil wood option personaly on my peugeot project... after examining both options closely, i figured after i go through and have the first couple threads cut out of my frame for the chamferred bottom bracket... i would have to find a shop with the proper tool, then pay to have it cut (or buy the tool myself) and then im left with a frame that can only ever take that bottom bracket if i like it or not...
doesnt seem like a worthwhile idea... i doubt it will save that much money (and deffinitly not time) in the long run, and at least if you have a problem you can go back to a traditional bottom bracket

I don't know of any company that makes a cartridge bottom bracket with French threading. The Phil option is more than I'm willing to spend on a BB. French cupsets show up on eBay fairly often. The last one I bought was a NOS Campy NR and I paid $40.00 for it. It even came with a spare adjustable cup and lockring, both NOS. I already had a spindle for it, but they're plentiful on eBay. The price can get ridiculous for a complete set. I'm an old fashioned kind of guy. I prefer to use vintage parts on my vintage bikes. The Campy, T.A. and Stronglight parts last a long time with minimal care. The Stronglight on my PX10 is 32 years old and still going strong. It will probably outlast me.

Thanks for the informative replies. Based on economics I'm going to reuse what I've got. There was nothing wrong with the original setup, other than the annoying tendency for the drive side cup to loosen. I'll hit it with repack with new grade 25 balls, new grease and a hit of loctite on the threads. Here's to pretty lugs and new paint. Now I just need to get it back from the guy painting it...
