Campagnolo narrow vs ultra-narrow chain question

Just trying to find out what's the difference b/n the present ultra-narrow 10 speed chain to earlier 10 speed chains from Campagnolo.

I understand the current standard is 5.9mm. Given two chains in front of me, I can I differentiate b/n the two just by using a caliper? The 5.9mm designation, just what exactly is that measurement? The width of the pin? Or width of the chain by the outer plates?

Anyone know this for certain?

I have a Wipperman 10X1 chain on my Chorus 10-speed bike. Wipperman specifies this chain for Campy 10-speed use and gives the width as 6.2 mm. Mine mikes 6.26 mm across the pin ends and 6.02 mm across the outer side plates so it appears Wipperman uses the pin width as their published value. I expect Campy does the same.

BTW, Wipperman 10-speed chains for Shimano are spec'ed as 6.0 mm width and I asked the Wipperman distributor if they would work on a 10-speed Campy set-up now that Campy has changed their own chains to 5.9 mm. I was told they will work just fine on a Campy drivetrain and, oddly enough, are priced lower than the same level Wipperman chain advertised for Campy use.

Thanks for the info. I have been thinking about that Wippermann link too for my new chain, but not fully comfortable just yet.
