SRAM chain on Shimano gearset???
I needed a new chain for a beater I'm putting together for a friend. The only chain I could get hold of - need it for tomorrow, is a cheap end SRAM chain. It says it's for 6-8 speed - this bike's a 7 speed, only it's Shimano Dura. I've not opened the packet yet, so I can always return the chain. ANyone know if it will be okay with the Shimano gearing, or are they incompatible?
Oh I should explain, it was from Decathlon, and the spotty teenager on the bike counter didn;t know. |
I think most chains have the same dimensions until you get to 9/10 speed rears. Those are narrower. I could be wrong, though.
I know my Sorrento with an 8sp RD says "USE SHIMANO CHAIN ONLY" on the chainring, but I've run an SRAM PowerLink chain for hundreds of miles with nothing but awesome things to say about it. I'd say your odds are good that it will work great. |
I like SRAM on my 9 speed. I've been happy with it and have had no trouble with shifting or otherwise.

SRAM chain with Shimano gear is fine.
