Halfway through brake swap, and uh oh....

Hey all, so I've been switching out the old Shimano cantilevers on my old Schwinn mountain bike with newer v-brakes from my newer Giant mountain bike, which I plan to sell.

I've hooked up the new brake/shifters and the installed the brakes, on the Schwinn, but as I was walking home I realized - I can't put the old Schwinn cantilevers on the Giant, because it has a suspension and no cable hanger on the fork!

Is there any part I can buy that will put a cable hanger on that fork or am I out of luck?

Also, another question about the headset - I pulled off the cable hanger from the Schwinn, which was serving as a spacer I guess. Now the locknut on tab doesn't really have anything to screw down on. Is this a problem and how do I fix that? Is it supposed to be tight on a spacer? I'm not really sure which parts of the headset are supposed to be fixed/screwed down or not... I'm really unfamiliar with headsets! Thanks for all the help you all!

Go tho your lbs and ask them for a cable hanger, mine was $8 and bolts on to the fork throught the fender eyelet. You can see it attached here. I never replaced the spacer on my fork, never had a problem.

I don't think there is a cable hanger that'll adapt on a suspension fork. I've never seen one.

Good point, I forgot it was a suspension fork. One I have probably wouldn't work.

Does the Giant have a threadless fork or a quill stem? If it has a quill, you can get one of the old style MTB stems with a hole in the top. The brake cable actually uses the stem as the cable hanger. You can usually find the stems in 1" & 1 1/8" on ebay. Saves you a lot of time.

Or try one of these: https://sporting-goods.search-desc.eb...ofocusZunknown

Good luck

Yeah, you'll need one of those upside-down U-shape bridges that connect the two fork-legs and gives you a stop/hanger for the cable-housing.
