BB Squeaking??
 

Ive noticed a squeaking comming from what seems like my BB. It seems to squeak on almost the same spot on each turn of the crank. I had the whole bike checked at 40 miles for the usual break in adjustments/inspection. Now at 130 miles I noticed this squeak for the last week. Is it normal to have to grease the BB at 130 miles? Does this sound like the problem? Its most definitly making the noise only when I turn the crank.

If it is the BB, is there an easy way to shoot grease in there without taking it apart?, Or should I just let the LBS do it? Thanks..

BTW, the chain is perfectly clean and newly oiled, and cogs very clean.

If it's a recent bike there's no way to regrease it unless it's a really cheap shimano cartridge bb. Tell us what kind of bb you have.

Also, squeaks can come from anywhere on the bike. Process of elimination.

To the best of my knowledge, its a TRUVATIV CARTRIDGE POWERSPLINE. A moment ago I thought Ild check to see if it wasnt the pedals themselves squeaking as I turned it. I turned it using the crank arm without touching the pedals and still a squeak.

A few drops of lube where the BB screws in, over a short period of time will stop the noise.

Have you been riding in the rain, even a little bit? If you have, it might be the chain. Have you lubed the chain lately?

Squeak, as mentioned above, could be a lot of things. Search the forums for bottom bracket creak, and you'll get a ton of ideas. Basically, anything that can move on your bike could be mistaken for a BB creak. Good luck.

I laid the chain off to the side of the 3 front rings and turned again. Still squeaking. Ill take it to the LBS and watch them so that next time i might do it myself.

Just a thought....is there any chance that grease could be squirted down the seat tube to reach the BB? Or is that sealed off from the rest of the frame tubes? That would be convienient. Ill look with a flashlight to be sure.

Are we talking about a cartridge BB or are we talking about an adjustable cup and cone with spindle BB set-up? What brand and age is the bike?

I don't think there would be many bikes with the facility to push grease into a BB... most have had to be done aftermarket. Certainly, access via the seat tube is not an option.

One thing it could be if it has seals is that rubber of the seals making the squeak. I get this on my sealed pedals from time to time. A single drop of oil on the BB spindle right against the seal may solve this. You can also can just splash a small amount of water on there in the process of elimination before using the oil.

But other than that... who knows.

It's a sealed cartridge bearing. It is unserviceable with grease internally. If it is the cartridge, then it may be the seals on the outside. I'd still suggest the water then drop of oil. If that doesn't work, then you might have to put up with a noisy BB. (Note: I don't think it's the BB threads because the squeak still is made when there is no load on the cranks).

Just did the drops of oil on the seal area and it still squeaks. Im taking it on a 20 mile ride Friday so maybey it will work out. If not, oh well it isnt that loud anyway, I was just worried I might damage something, but if its a sealed cart then theres not much you can do anyway. The more I think about it though...I cleaned the bike very well a few days ago so that may in fact be what happened.?.? I cant say I noticed the noise before, although I know its comming from the BB area as it does it with the chain laid to the side. Maybey the drops of oil will work in there. Thanks for the help guys!
