Campy 11x23, then 13x29 on same chain length?

Can I place a wheel with an 11x23 campy 10s cogset, and then swap with a different wheel with a 13x29 campy 10s cogset with a Record rear deraileur (do I need to use long cage?) and use the same length chain?

This may lead to problems if there is not enough chain to go around the big-big combination, or too much chain for the small-small combination. That's partly having to do with how much chain you've got, and partly with the takeup capacity of your rear derailer - basically it must be specified to takeup the difference between the largest and smallest chainrings plus the difference between the largest and smallest cogs. Also the rear derailer must be able to deal with a 29 size cog; some only go up to 27.

Park Tool and Sheldon Brown's site have information on all these things concerning derailer compatablity.

But the short answer is you can't just slap on a 13-29 where you were using a 11-23 and be confident that it will work. There are a few things that you need to check, and it might mean a new chain, and it might mean a new chain and a new derailer.

However, if you size the chain for the 13-29, it will work just fine with the 11-23!

You should never, ever ride in the small/small combination, but it won't do any harm to accidentally shift into it. Worst case, the chain will droop a bit, big whoop.

For that matter, I'm curious - at what point does big cog size start to restrict derailer selection as a separate issue from capacity? Is it just a matter of fiddling with the B-screw?

Pretty much any derailer made in the last 20 years will work with a 30 tooth sprocket. Beyond that you generally need a wide range derailer (what the marketeers call a "mountain" derailer.)

Campagnolo specifies a "medium cage" derailleur for the 13-29 cassette but some riders have reported OK results using the short cage derailleur by staying out of the inside ring and smaller cog combinations. Chain length is critical. I think you should be able to do what you plan to do, just be careful. It's important that the rear derailleur does not reach its limits.

My tandem came with a 9sp 11-34 and XT long cage rear derailer. I recently switched to a 12-23 cassette (much better for our type of riding) with only a minor adjustment to the tension and no change to the chain. This is the opposite of what the OP may be doing but at least it shouldn't be an issue to swap back and forth once it is set up right.
