9 Speed Ultegra Rear D and 5 Speed Chain/Cog
Can I run a 9 Speed Ultegra rear dérailleur with a 5 speed chain and cog? Friction shifters of course, but is there anything else I am missing like pulley width etc? (BTW, I know it is overkill, but these are the parts I have on hand)

If the chain fits between the cage plate (sure should), you'll have no problems.

+1 to what Yairi said, although I'll add if you don't have a derailleur mount on the frame itself you might need to get an adapter claw for the ultegra...
Although the content of the post really reminds me of the time I thought of putting a 2 piece crank on my 70s Schwinn Suburban...
