Broken Rear Shifter, derailleur question

Hi guys,

I did search this topic before i posted but found nothing. I have an old stumpjumper with shimano lx components. My gear shifter for the rear gears doesn't work, feels loose and doesn't shift. This bike is just a commuting bike not really for business so i don't care BUT is there any way i can manually shift the rear derailleur to go down 2 or 3 gears without the use of the shifter? because its stuck in 7th and the chain is crossed at times and is starting to skip.

Thanks

There's a good chance that you can get it shifting again by replacing the cable. If you want to lock it into 1 gear, disconnect the cable at the rear derailler and wind in the high limit screw until the derailler is over the cog you want to use. Note, the travel is limited, you won't be able to push it into the lowest gear, but you should be able to move it some.
