barrel adjuster replacement
I was adjusting my FD the other day and went to my barrel adjuster (the inline kind, located up on the down tube) to find that it was stuck and wouldn't turn. I then brain-farted and put a pair of pliers onto it to loosen it, only to crack the plastic housing off of the adjuster. I've been spraying it with WD-40 to loosen it up and now can get it to turn if I put a pair of vice-grip onto it and turn, but it's pretty tight still but movable.
This is the barrel adjuster I have:
https://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cg...em_id=JW-CM019
My questions:
1. If I continue to crank on them to loosen them up (and to replace the broken one) is there a chance I'll shear the top part of the adjuster (the part that where the cable housing seats into the adjuster) off of the screw threads?...I wold imagine this would complicated the situation more than it already is...
2. These are the kind of Barrel Adjusters that have screw threads that screw directly a boss that is welded onto the frame...is there a better, more maintainable barrel adjuster that will work with the frame?
Thanks and I look forward to your comments!

Flood the threads with penetrating oil and let it soak in before you continue. Then unthread the adjuster completely and replace it with a new one like you illustrated. Occasionally put a drop of oil on the threads of the replacement to keep this from happening again. There are no "more maintainable" adjusters. You just have to maintain what you have.

Oh man! Where was this post a few days ago
I was looking for this particular piece and searched online for a while. I ended up going to the LBS for this part and the cable guide. I needed more things but wanted to make them all in one purchase...oh well.
AFIK, if you keep turning the metal barrel that sits inside the plastic barrel you might be able to take the adjuster off without harming the cable housing.

Yeah, well...if you look its a $2-3dollar piece, but then they charge $6 for S/H....you were probably better off going to LBS for it.
I was planning on loosening everything and taking the cable out of the housing so it could be replaced.

You can try getting the inline one thats actually part of the cable. they are on newer bikes and is a rotating tube thingey that part of the cable/housing system that runs across your handlebars. I did that and it was a lil bit of work you (you need to cut cable and housing), but I think its worth it. Wouldn't think it'd work so great for mtbs or a campy set-up though, but then, never tried.
This is what they look like, but I would get em in a shop b/c shipping costs like bill said:

Some bike shops might give em for free, usually if you go there a lot.
